TIPS FROM A LOCAL
Top Tips: Despite the strong influence of North American culture, tipping is not much observed beyond the 10-15% service charge added to bills.
Northern Highlights: The North of the island is mostly owned by the military, which means little residential build up and lots of deserted beaches.
Culture Vulture: Head south to catch a glimpse of the native Chamorro culture, unique to this part of the globe.
Coconut Candy and Pickled Papaya: These moreish treats are ubiquitous on the island and nibbled on by everyone. Pickled papaya, or "atsara" as it is known in Chamorro, is a spicy combination of chili and green papaya, of which every family guards their own recipe—tourists can stock up on the most lauded commercial version at Kathy’s Mini Mart. Coconut candy is a simple but delicious treat, blending sugar and shaved coconut, and has been enjoyed on the island since time immemorial.
