To the north of Islay and Jura is the world’s second-largest whirlpool, the famous Corryvreckan. Celtic ancestors knew it as the "Mother Goddess" or "womb of all creation." Breacan, the Viking prince who fell in love with the daughter of an Islay princess and was challenged to prove his devotion by surviving three nights in the whirlpool. The brave suitor went into the perilous maelstrom, where one by one the three ropes that he carried to anchor his vessel were pulled asunder and thus, says the legend, Breacan perished beneath the whirlpool that now bears his name: Corryvreckan.
