This property is beautifully placed on a hilltop in the Sauternes commune, and its history started in the 15th century. With its 103 hectares of vineyards, Château Yquem is one of the very few properties in the district to use both semi-botrytised and fully botrytised grapes for the wine, in order to have enough acidity to balance the sweetness. Château d’Yquem, the only winemaker to be classed Premier Cru Classé Supérieur in 1855, had been in the hands of Lur-Saluces family from 1785 until 1997 when the luxury-goods giant LVMH gained a majority of shares. Today, Pierre Lurton, previously manager at Cheval Blanc, has thus far succeeded to maintain d'Yquem's fantastic quality.
Beautifully made, with a gorgeous nose of tropical fruits, peaches, coconut and apricots. Surprisingly well integrated acidity, and a seamless, full-bodied power, unctuously textured. Just starting to reveal its complexity and enormous weight. This 1995 is very rich and harmonious.
