Angkor

THE GATEWAY TO ANGKOR'S ANCIENT TEMPLES

Well known as the launchpad for the 12th century Khmer temples, the city has also become a showcase of contemporary Cambodian culture.

While the magnificent temples surrounded by the encroaching jungle will always be Siem Reap's primary attraction, the experience today is heightened by the world-class myriad of boutique hotels, spas and eating options on offer—many of which highlight the area's colonial past and deliver their offerings with an elegant nod to both French and Cambodian styles. It's little wonder then that Siem Reap recently placed third on Travel & Leisure's "World's Best Cities" to visit list.

WHAT TO PACK

A Quality Camera: For with the spectacular temples framing the sunrises and sunsets on offer, you'll need more than your phone camera to do your photography justice.

Shades, A Hat and Some Sunscreen: Siem Reap is a tropical climate and that sun is HOT.

An Umbrella or Light Raincoat: Pack some protection if you are visiting during the quieter rainy season from June to October.

Mosquito Repellent: It's a must, particularly for the early evenings.

ESSENTIAL PHRASES

You'll need these sayings in Khmer—the country's official language spoken by 90% of the population:
Johm riab suay: Hello. For less formal situations, a simple "surs dey" will suffice.

Aw kohn: Thank you

Jul mouy and Lerk dach: Cheers!

Lia suhn hao-y: Goodbye

TIPS FROM A LOCAL

Start Your Day Early: Temple entry passes go on sale from 5:00 am and multilingual guides can be hired starting at US$20 a day.

Rent a Bike: Traveling on two wheels will permit you to see much more of the ruins. For the ultimate vantage point, book a helicopter ride.

Stroll Along Pub Street: For a lively night out, try exploring the bars along the bustling street and its alleys.

Carry Cash:  Keep plenty of low-denomination US dollars in your pocket for taxis and low-cost items. Cambodia's currency, the Riel, is generally given back as change, and is welcomed when tipping.
