Venice

THE SERENISSIMA

Imagine a stage of 121 islands and 435 bridges, with a backdrop of marble palaces and paved stone passageways. The plot is rich with history, drama, culture, commerce and arts.
The star is none other than the noble lady herself, Venice, the Queen of the Adriatic; with her serene yet ethereal appearance she dominates the waters with unmatchable regality.
Embrace Venice's romantic spirit and enjoy the picturesque blend between buildings and meandering waterways as you interact with the charismatic Venetians over a refreshing Bellini or one of the many local delicacies. Get to the other islands and experience Venetian life at a slower pace as you admire world-class masters craft exquisite glass pieces and laced embroidery.

WHAT TO PACK

Comfy shoes: Venice is a pedestrian paradise, so sensible walking shoes are a must if you wish to enjoy a full day of sightseeing.

Quality camera: You'll want to take a shot at every corner. With a vast array of textures, colors and subjects, you'll be thrilled to let your inner artistic spirit out.

Mosquito repellent for Summer: The proximity to water means mosquitos can be a nuisance. Don't be caught unguarded.

An umbrella or raincoat for Winter: If you visit during the colder months you'll experience a fascinating Venice embraced by fog, but it also means cold and rainy days.  A colorful raincoat or an umbrella can brighten up a dull day so you can keep enjoying what the city has to offer.

ESSENTIAL PHRASES

Pronounciation Tip: There are no wasted vowels in Italian, make sure to pronounce them all.

Buongiorno: The standard greeting that can be used anytime from the morning until 5PM, after this time Buona sera (Good evening) applies.

Arrivederci: Goodbye

Grazie: Thank you - An easy word, often mispronounced. The pronounciation is  ‘Grahts/yeh'

Salute / Cin Cin!: Cheers!

TIPS FROM A LOCAL

Skip the tickets' lines and get your transport pass and museums packages online with the City Pass Venezia Unica.

Besides the many exquisite local dishes, Venice offers an excellent variety of baked goodies. Don't leave without having tried "Pan co ea suca" or "Pan de ua", both are types of sweet bread made respectively with pumpkin and with raisins.

Wifi is not always free or reliable, so shop for a local pre-paid SIM to use on your (unlocked) phone. In Italy, pre-paid SIM and packages are conveniently priced and offer large data bundles. Being able to check the timetable of trains or ferries, map out your directions or even translate sentences at the palm of your hand, will radically improve your experience.
