Auckland

THE CITY OF SAILS

"The Land of the Long White Cloud" is familiar to most audiences through the stunning backdrops of Peter Jackson’s iconic films. Rest assured, the scenery is no less awe-inspiring in real life. A heady mix of lush tropical foliage, pounding waves, mountain highlands, snow-capped mountains and fjords juxtapose themselves against one another—the country is a sight to see beyond the silver screen. What Middle-earth does not convey is the warmth and easy-going charm of modern New Zealand life. Though not the nation’s capital (that honor goes to Wellington), Auckland is home to nearly a third of the nation's population, forming an international metropolis that nevertheless remains true to the Kiwi spirit, where world-class facilities and luxury labels are seen hand-in-hand with ancient Māori culture and a passion for the natural surrounds.

WHAT TO PACK

Umbrella and Sweater: New Zealand’s weather is notoriously changeable, so be prepared for sudden showers and cold snaps.

T-Shirts and Jeans: The Kiwi culture is very casual; for the most part, you can dress down.

Outdoor Wear: Unless you’re only in town for business, you will be hard put to resist a little of the adventure available right on Auckland’s doorstep, from rain forest trails and treks along the rugged coastline to four-wheel driving and sailing.

ESSENTIAL PHRASES

Kia ora: “Be well” in Māori, widely used as a greeting or farewell.

Fush and chups: The national dish. That and pavlova, the meringue, fruit and cream concoction that is defiantly Kiwi (despite what the Aussies might say).

Good as: The short form of the phrase “good as gold,” used to express approval. It can also be extended to other adjectives, e.g. “sweet as,” “beached as.”

The All Blacks: The best sports team on the planet.

TIPS FROM A LOCAL

Sunscreen and Hat: Like Australia, New Zealand is an outdoorsy nation with a proximity to the hole in the ozone layer, so remember to protect your epidermis even on cloudy days.

Maxx Out: Hit the public transport website, www.maxx.co.nz, to plan your trips across town, as the system can be very frustrating. Alternatively, hire a car during your stay.

Māori Manners: The Māori culture has its own set of etiquette. If you are visiting a marae, be sure to brush up beforehand and follow the lead of your host.
