Cairns

COSMOPOLITAN COMFORTS IN THE TROPICAL NORTH

Sitting on the Great Barrier Reef and surrounded by lush rainforest, Cairns is the urban base for travelers seeking the natural wonders of Australia. A city for the intrepid, Cairns relishes the outdoors. Whether it be embarking on a bush safari, white water rafting down river rapids, hot air ballooning over the Atherton Tablelands, or exploring the vast oceanic beauties from above and below the waves; priority number one is to have a splendid time. Adventure seeking aside, Cairns is has a laid-back tropical charm that is warm and welcoming after a day’s excursion, ready to greet you with a cold drink.

WHAT TO PACK

Sunscreen: Safety first! When in Australia, protection from harmful UV rays is definitely a priority, especially when out having a tropical adventure. As well as a high SPF, look for long lasting and waterproof sunscreen.

Swimmers: You’ll want to be on or in the water at some point, so be prepared.

Mozzie repellent: Fun fact: Aerogard was created by the CSIRO to make a 1968 visit to Australia by the Queen more pleasant.

ESSENTIAL PHRASES

Stubby: A 375mL bottle of beer

A Pot: A 285mL glass measure of beer (a middy when you’re in Sydney)

Budgie smugglers: Preferred swimwear for Olympic level swimmers and dads

Thongs: Flip flops

Beaut: A thing of beauty

TIPS FROM A LOCAL

Your shout: Aussie tradition calls for buying drinks in rounds, and it’s important to shout your round.

Hydration: Drink water early and often. Temperatures in Cairns can soar up to 89°F in the height of summer. Pack a big bottle before you go out for the day—you never know where your adventures in town might lead you. Hikes, beaches and market shopping are all very thirsty endeavors.

Whale Watching: If you’re a keen diver/snorkeler, and dipping in the Great Barrier Reef is the main reason for visiting Cairns, be aware that Dwarf Minke Whales and Humpbacks visit the area from May to July. A sighting of one of these beauties is a rare and fortunate occasion.
