Built in 1897 at 1,073 feet, the distillery is one of the highest in Scotland. The name derives from Gaelic for "meeting place" of sheep and cattle drovers. The coldest inhabited place in Scotland (Met. Office 1994). Fragile beginnings: five owners in 30 years before James Buchanan & Co. took over in 1926, then modernized in 1968 to 1972 and refitted in 1995 to 1996, with traditional worm tubs retained. Traditional worm tubs ensure a slow distillation, which provides the extra body in this whisky.
