Global Judith Leiber Judith Leiber,
Judith Leiber was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary where she studied the craft of handbag making during World War II. In 1974 Mrs. Leiber immigrated to the US with her husband Gerson. In 1963, the couple launched their own handbag company, and after 35 years of growing their small business into the premiere American line, they retired and sold the business in 1998. This year, the company is celebrating its 51st anniversary. The signature crystal heritage of the Judith Leiber brand originated when Mrs. Leiber ordered a minaudière through the mail from Italy as a gift for a friend and the bag arrived dented. Mrs. Leiber decided to decorate the bag with crystals to hide the imperfection, and as a result the beaded minaudière was born. Judith Leiber minaudières are part of the permanent collection at museums around the world including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, The Houston Museum of Fine Art, and the Los Angeles Museum of Art. Adding to Hollywood’s nearly 50-year love affair with the brand, almost every First Lady dating back to 1963 has carried a custom-made bag to the U.S. Presidential Inauguration ceremonies. Today, the creative director of Judith Leiber is Jana Matheson. CFDA member, and industry award winner, Mrs. Matheson is charged with providing a new vision for the Judith Leiber brand while retaining its designs in the tradition and whimsy of Mrs. Leiber. Her expertise in the luxury market is unparalleled, and her global point of view is sure to bring the brand to new heights.
