Global Karuizawa Karuizawa,
Established 1955 in a popular Japanese mountain resort at the foot of Mount Asama. The highest distillery in Japan. Very traditional: Oregon pine washbacks and small (4,000 litre) pot stills, with sherry butts from Spain. Possibly the most expensive way of making whisky.A big, aromatic, smoky, full-bodied, sherried. Described as being ‘Stout like a soldier’. A 1988 Cask #103 won Malt Maniacs Japanese Whisky of the Year 2007. Three warehouses on site, mostly filled with sherry butts. Barley was imported from Scotland; 100% Golden Promise used since 1994. Soft water came from Mount Asama springs with a moderate mineral content.
