T GALLERIA BY DFS FALL/WINTER 2015 CAMPAIGN | CHIHARU OKUNUGI FT. TIFFANY KEYS As one of today’s most in-demand models, Chiharu Okunugi has graced countless magazine covers, editorials and catwalks in her career. Since she was scouted at a Tokyo train station on her way to school, she has walked the runway for some of the most prestigious fashion houses in the world and has been featured in international campaigns for Céline and Chanel. Here, in an exclusive interview with T Galleria by DFS, the latest star of our Fall/Winter 2015 campaign shares her thoughts on travel, her personal in-flight ritual and where she plans to take off to next.
T stands for travel. What does travel mean to you? To me, travel means adventure. Whether for work or for play, it means taking off to places I’ve yet to discover or seeing familiar cities from a different perspective.
What is your favorite mode of transportation? My preferred mode of transportation is by bullet train. The time I save traveling allows me to spend more time exploring what's truly exciting—the city.
Describe your perfect vacation. My idea of the perfect vacation would be my boyfriend and I relaxing on a sunny beach somewhere in the Caribbean right after fashion month.
Tell us about your latest adventure. For vacation, my boyfriend and I went to Bangkok. We did a lot of shopping and sightseeing. A couple of my favorite stops were the Temple of the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and the night markets. They were so colorful and full of life—truly a feast for the eyes. We also ate delicious Thai cuisine. The seafood there is amazing. All in all, I brought back some great memories from the trip—and a new bag that I love. The seat-belt sign just dimmed and you’re settling in for a long flight. How do you pass the time? How do I pass the time? With movies—at least two per flight.
Do you have any in-flight rituals? It is important that I feel comfortable on long-haul flights, especially when flying back to New York City from Tokyo. So, I like to wear PJ bottoms and a cashmere jumper, which I change into as soon as I'm on the plane.
What do you pack first? I like to check the weather of the city where I’m headed. Even so, I always pack my skirts first. I admit I’m going through a real phase at the moment.
What are your beauty essentials when traveling? I have to have my skincare products with me, like Shu Uemura’s facial oils. I like to use organic products whenever possible. My other beauty essentials include a big bottle of water and moisturizer.
What do you always forget to pack? I always forget to pack my travel adapter.
What is your #1 travel tip? Check-in online and always ask for a window seat.
What is the most inspiring journey you’ve taken and how has it changed you? The most inspiring journey I’ve ever taken was to the Swiss Alps. I was totally overwhelmed by all the natural beauty and the sheer scale of everything around me. I’m learning to ski so I can go back.
Describe the most beautiful place you have visited. Without a doubt, the most beautiful place that I have visited is Kyoto during the Cherry Blossom Festival.
Is there a souvenir you treasure most from all your travels? I brought back a small pot of sand stars from Okinawa over ten years ago and I still have it.
What do you always pick up at the duty free? When I travel, I like to pick up local treats at the duty free that I cannot find anywhere else.
What destination is next on your list? I’d love to visit Greece and go island-hopping there. I know there are so many islands that I would have to spend at least a month there to see them all. I hear Cephalonia and Santorini are a must.
How do you record your travels around the world? I love taking photos and sharing them with my friends and family.
