Safety first
With travel restrictions around the globe continuing to ease, the opportunity to start planning more far-flung vacations is thrilling. Even so, the pandemic continues to contribute to anxieties around travel, particularly due to the close proximity to others while flying. If you’re feeling a little apprehensive about an upcoming trip, read on for some simple safety precautions to help ease your mind.
1. ASK FOR A WINDOW SEAT
Research shows that the safest spot to sit on the plane to steer clear of transmitted germs is next to the window. This is because it is the most isolated and, important, furthest from the people moving through the aisle.
2. CONSIDER YOUR BATHROOM BREAKS
If possible, try to use the bathroom before you board your flight to decrease the number of times you use the plane’s restroom. With airport bathrooms being much roomier, it’ll be easiest to keep your distance from others.
3. CHOOSE A COMFORTABLE FACE MASK
Wearing your face mask throughout the entire flight is important, which means comfort — particularly for long-haul flights — is a savior. What’s comfortable for someone else might not be comfortable for you, so try a couple on before your flight. You’ll also need to make sure it fits, as gaps can let respiratory droplets leak in. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends checking for gaps by cupping your hands around the outside edges of the mask, and making sure no air is flowing from the area near your eyes or from the sides of the mask.
4. DISINFECT HARD SURFACES
When you get to your seat, use clean hands and disinfecting wipes to wipe down the hard surfaces of your surroundings, such as the head and arm rest, seatbelt buckle, remote, screen, and seat pocket. For the touch-screen television, consider using a paper towel or tissue while using the screen.
5. USE HAND SANITIZER REGULARLY
Most people tend to touch their faces more often than they realize. Keep a hand sanitizer within close reach and apply it generously and regularly. The CDC recommends a product that’s at least 60 percent alcohol.
6. PACK A REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE
While drinking plenty of water on a flight is always a good idea for hydration, avoid the contact of constantly needing to get up or ask for small portions of water by bringing your own. Simply take a large, empty reusable water bottle with you to the airport, and fill it up after you’ve gone through security. If security doesn’t allow for this, your best bet is to buy a large bottle after you pass through.
7. CONSIDER A BYO PILLOW, BLANKET, OR EYE MASK
While it’s not safety related, for comfort and health, it’s worth remembering that not all airlines are back to offering their usual amenities, such as pillows, blankets, and eye masks. To ensure you get some rest, particularly if you’re traveling long-haul, consider packing your own cozy extras.
