Robert Mondavi Winery

WINES THAT STAND AMONG THE WORLD’S FINEST

In 1966 Robert Mondavi set out to fulfill his lifelog dream when he founded the Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley’s Oakville District. It was the first major winery to be built in the valley since Prohibition. That was only the beginning of his far-reaching vision. Mr. Mondavi saw the potential of the then-unrecognized Napa Valley to become one of the world’s pre-eminent winegrowing regions. With boundless enthusiasm and drive, he set out to make that happen.

Mr. Mondavi knew that the place to begin was the vineyard. For the home of his fledging winery, he chose a 12-acre site in the To Kalon Vineyard, a historic property long regarded as one of Napa Valley’s finest vineyards. With the 1968 release of the first vintage of Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon, the world’s eyes were opened to the exceptional quality of wine grapes grown in the Napa Valley. The historic Paris tasting of 1976. At which two former winemakers of the Robert Mondavi Winery won first prize, further supported this revelation.

The winery that he built – now famous for its mission-style architecture, expansive archway and bell tower – has become an enduring landmark that honors California’s history and also the legacy of Robert Mondavi, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 94.
