Built in the early 1600s, the Guia Fortress was originally intended to protect the city from naval assaults. Today, it is simply a place to enjoy uninterrupted views of the city below and the sea stretching out ahead. To access, first take a scenic walk through the Flora Garden (Jardim de Flora) then either walk up the hill or take the cable car to avoid the heat. At the top lies the fort, chapel and lighthouse waiting to be explored.
