When she’s not walking the international runways or gracing the covers the world’s leading fashion magazines, Puerto Rican born supermodel and Estée Lauder’s first Latina spokesmodel Joan Smalls calls New York her home.
We met with Joan to find out why New York is so special to her, what she carries in her beauty bag a day in the city and most importantly, where to find the best burger in town—all exclusively for DFS.
"I love the New York City skyline. The glittering lights and the iconic buildings are just a reminder of the magnitude of New York City. My first impression was the amount of energy that the city has. You go from Harlem to Coney Island to Queens and you always have a cool sense of where you’re traveling.
I love walking in Central Park because even though it’s a really big space I always bump into someone. One thing I love about SoHo is the fact that there are cobblestones and it reminds you of Old New York. And it has Georgetown Cupcakes: the best red velvet cupcake. The Museum of Natural History, from the dinosaurs to the animals, is such a good learning experience. Definitely go to Shake Shack. They have the best burgers.
It always feels nice going to Spanish Harlem. Seeing the Puerto Rican flags, you have a sense of pride within the community, which I think is beautiful. Nothing compares to New York. I’m Joan Smalls and my New York is nonstop energy."
