FIVE ESSENTIAL PHRASES
M̀h gòi: This serves as both please and thank you in Cantonese. As a beginner this should be enough, but for more advanced speakers, “dòjeh” is properly thanks for a gift, while “m̀h gòi” is for a service rendered.
Ho sihk: Delicious! This is for food only, for beverages, the phrase is “ho yum”.
Néih hóu?: Hello. Literally, “you’re well?”, this is rhetorical, with the usual response simply to parrot the greeting in return.
Aiya!: An expression of pain, shock or frustration – flexible and satisfying.
