Hawaii

“THE GATHERING PLACE"

With its modern towers rising against the crash of turquoise waves, Hawaii is a vibrant metropolis with plenty to offer those looking for a fun and fashion-forward city break, and visitors looking to soak up the most sublime bounties of Mother Nature. A former resort of Hawaiian royalty, this stretch of sand and sea has become one of the world’s most famous beaches. Out of the water, this tropical city exudes a friendly small-town vibe, with the locals infusing the ‘Aloha Spirit’ into the simple pleasures that make the time here a treat, whether for a romantic honeymoon, exploring the surf scene, or wintering with the jet-set crowd.

WHAT TO PACK

Take A Dive: A trip to Hawaii is not complete without a dip in the Pacific, so swimwear is a must.

Laid-Back Style: With the island’s casual dress code, there are plenty of venues where long trousers and a collared shirt are a sign one hasn’t quite relaxed into the spirit of things.

Bag It Up: Something light for excursions that can fit at least your sunscreen, insect repellent, water bottle and a towel.

HELPFUL WORDS

Aloha: This well-known phrase is popularly used to say both hello and goodbye, but its meaning transcends a mere salutation—“Aloha” also connotes love, joy and living in harmony.

Pehea 'oe?: Get hip with the kids by asking them the Hawaiian equivalent of “What’s up?”

Mahalo: Thank you.

Okole maluna!: Say cheers the local way before sipping your Mai Tais and Piña Coladas.

TIPS FROM A LOCAL

The ‘Aloha Spirit’: Extending a warm welcome, most hotels and even bars greet guests with a lei; it is customary to give that lei away later to bring good luck.

Resort Wear: Dress codes can vary greatly between high-end bars and restaurants. Some require resort wear, but there are many where a pair of flip flops and board shorts would suffice.

Liquid Sun: The rainy season commences around November and lasts until around March. With their sunny disposition, the Hawaiians dub these prolonged periods of rainfall ‘liquid sun.’
