Insider’s Guide To Singapore

As the owner and designer of local cult label Exhibit and ambassador of L’Officiel Singapore, Yoyo Cao is a bona fide star of the Singapore fashion scene. “To me, Singapore is more than just the city I live in—it’s my home away from home,” the Macau-born entrepreneur says. “Because Singapore doesn’t have distinct seasons, the best time to visit is during the last quarter of the year when it is not too humid and the temperature begins to dip a little.”

SINGAPORE: HERE & NOW

From skyscrapers to street food, Singapore offers the best of both worlds when it comes to authentic old world charm and totally new experiences. The financial hub is a breeding ground for innovation—a place where creators create whether in the kitchen or on the street. Wild concoctions gain it-factor status overnight while tried-and-true traditions remain sacred and forever loved.

WHAT TO PACK

Ultra-Light Fabrics: Singapore’s tropical climate means it’s warm all year round. When packing, opt for thin woven cottons, airy silks and natural blends.

A Trusty Umbrella: Tropical climates mean monsoon showers. Clear mornings may look deceiving as storm clouds can roll in at any time of the day. Carry an umbrella wherever you go—you’ve been warned.

Stay Minty Fresh: Swap your gum for mints to avoid being fined. It’s true—your favorite pastime is against the law.

FIVE ESSENTIAL PHRASES

“Can”: An affirmative response to a request and an alternative to the more pedestrian “ok.” This can be repeated to drive home the point. The correct negative response is “No can.”

“-lah”: Added to the end of sentences to punctuate the point.

“Kopi”: Forget Starbucks, order a kopi for your caffeine hit. The local brew is strong and black, sweetened with condensed or evaporated milk.

““Wah-lau!”: Used in order to express shock or surprise.

TIPS ONLY A LOCAL WOULD KNOW

Night Cabs: Keep a few cab numbers in tow when heading out for a night in the town to avoid having to hunt, hail and fight for wheels as bars and clubs pour out at 3am.

Best Behavior: Jaywalking, chewing gum and spitting are taboo in Singapore and may be subject to heavy penalties or even imprisonment!

King of Fruit: Durian is the national fruit and a must-try for adventurous diners. Be warned that while delicious these fruits are not to be brought back to your hotel or onboard your flight.
