Saipan

A SLICE OF TROPICAL HEAVEN IN THE PACIFIC.

The largest island in the Northern Mariana archipelago, Saipan is a lush paradise, as well as a surprising cultural melting pot. The locals are primarily Chamorro or Carolinian, but the island has become home for many Chinese, Filipino, Japanese and other Asian arrivals, who have brought snippets of their cultures to the Saipan mix. From wherever they hail, Saipan’s residents make up a society of laidback charm, sharing a love of the stunning surrounds and a spirit of camaraderie.

WHAT TO PACK

Dive certification: Saipan is a scuba diver’s dream, with glorious reefs and grottos to explore. If you are not yet certified, bring your sense of adventure: there are plenty of dive schools on hand to get you started.

Hiking shoes and day pack: While sun and sea may be the main attraction, Saipan boasts many gorgeous trails culminating in beaches or cool pools, so be sure to pack swimwear, towels and a light change of clothes.

Toiletries: Everything you need is available in the stores, so don’t panic if you forget anything, but the import prices are high.

ESSENTIAL PHRASES

Hello: Håfa Adai!

Thank you: Si Yu’us ma’ase

Excuse me: Dispensa yu

CNMI: The widely used acronym for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. In Chamorro, it is Sankattan Siha Na Islas Mariånas.

TIPS FROM A LOCAL

Step out: Though most of the tourist infrastructure is based in the capital, Garapan, it is outside of the city that Saipan’s natural charms lie, so be sure to get out and explore.
Vroom vroom: Public transport options are scanty, and taxis can be expensive, so the best option can be renting a car for your stay.

Safety first: Saipan only has one hospital and it is not extensive, so make sure your insurance allows for medical evacuation to the larger facilities in Guam or Hawaii.
