Sydney

AUSTRALIA'S FIRST CITY

While Melbourne claims to be Australia’s cultural capital and political power is held by Canberra, Sydney pulls rank as modern Australia’s spiritual centre. With its instantly recognizable skyline and breathtaking harbor, Sydney is certainly the most internationally celebrated of the country’s urban centers, but its character-rich suburbs and stunning surrounds offer plenty to discover outside of the Central Business District. From the fabulous shores of Bondi, to the hip eateries of Surry Hills, to the Blue Mountains and beyond, Sydney offers variety and energy, in a surprisingly accessible serving.

WHAT TO PACK

Cozzies: A trip to Sydney isn’t complete without a splash in the water, whether it’s lounging by your hotel’s rooftop pool, surfing at the beach, or laps in one of the spectacular seaside bathing pools, so suit up in your most stylish swimwear.

On Foot: Sydney is a big city that is easy to digest from a pedestrian’s point of view, so make sure you have comfortable walking shoes, not to mention a pair of ‘thongs’, i.e. flip flops.

Sunnies and Sunscreen: Of course these are readily available in Sydney, but considering the powerful UV rays it’s best to have these with you from the get go.

ESSENTIAL PHRASES

Yeahnah: Yes, I acknowledge your point, but the answer is probably no.

Schooner: Beer doesn’t just come in pints, they are frequently ordered in schooners (15 fluid ounces), or a middy (half pint). Never order a Foster’s in any measure.

Vegemite: Nectar of the gods; or bile of the devil, depending on your taste. This savory spread is a staple of the Australian breakfast table. If you’re a newbie, use sparingly with plenty of butter until you develop the taste for it.

TIPS FROM A LOCAL

Coffee culture – Shun chains like Starbucks and Gloria Jeans. Sydney (like Melbourne) is a city of coffee drinkers and you’ll find a plethora of independent, artisanal roasters in every suburb.

Early hours – Part of Sydney’s appeal is its work-life balance, which means people generally leave the office on time, so don’t leave business dealings, etc. to the late hours of the afternoon.

Slip! Slop! Slap! – With the potent Aussie sun, this old public service campaign still applies, both for locals and visitors: slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen (30+) and slap on a hat.
