Located just northwest of the towering Gunung Agung, Gunung Batur’s double calderas are considered sacred in aboriginal Balinese mythos. Like its bigger sister, Batur is also an active volcano., adding frisson to an otherwise scenic trek up to its summit, where the water of Lake Batur spreads over the crater. Rise and shine for a 4 am start—the trek takes about two hours to complete and can be a challenge, especially with limited light; but the staggering sunrise panorama is reason enough to stick it out.
