Almost completely destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, Shuri Castle was rebuilt in 1992 with the aid of historical documents and pictures. Now fully restored, and one of nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Okinawa, the majestic hilltop castle is the top remaining testament to the Ryukyu Dynasty in Okinawa. Throughout the year, ceremonies and reenactments of royal processions take place here, and despite being located in the busy capital of Naha, Shuri Castle remains very peaceful within the expansive, tranquil grounds.
