This traditional fishing village still produces the shrimp paste and salted fish that gives many Cantonese dishes their kick. A stroll through the streets will see many baskets of pungent paste laid out to dry in the sun. The village is also known for its picturesque stilted houses, a rarity in modern Hong Kong, as well as homes covered in ceramic tiles of a bygone style. A recent conservation scheme converted the old colonial police station into the Tai O Heritage Hotel, a 9-bedroom building that’s worth a look-and-see.
