A seasonal activity, January through March is whale-watching season in Okinawa. Through a locally organized tour, there is a high chance of spotting majestic humpbacks jumping, splashing and playing their way through the water only 40km off the coast of Okinawa’s capital, Naha. Coming from Alaska, the whales migrate 5,100 miles south to the warmth of the Okinawan waters which provide them ideal breeding conditions. A carefully monitored activity, the locals are understandably keen to preserve the integrity and safety of these noble mammals and take an eco-conscious stance on touring.
