The Historical Regata is the main racing event of the unique rowing method "Voga alla Veneta" when teams challenge each other's speed and stamina. A particularly heated one is the "Gondolini Race" where small sized gondolas, with only two men and two oars, blaze on the waters to reach victory. This ancient tradition is also celebrated with the Corteo Storico, where 16th century-style boats in period costume carry along the Grand Canal the Doge and his wife as well as all the high-ranking Venetian officials. Often, residents join in the celebration by also dressing up in period customes. The whole day has a party-like atmosphere almost like an end of Summer Carnival.
