SEE JAPAN’S MOST BEAUTIFUL GARDEN IN BLOOM

Harmoniously placed together in sacred form and viewed with reverence and awe are the elements that make up the Japanese Garden: rocks, trees, moss, and water.

Not often left to grow wild, they are nurtured and tended regularly to ensure the preservation of their beauty and to uphold the tradition of respecting the spirits that inhabit each organic inch. Kyoto, Japan is home to some of the most stunning natural spaces such as these. Among them is the garden of Saihō-ji, which stands sparklingly apart from the rest.

Enter through the gates only after having been invited to do so. Each guest upon arrival is asked to participate in observances of kito and shakyō, or the chanting and copying of Buddhist scriptures, called sutra. There are small writing desks at the temple and a monk leads the room in the ritual. Thereafter, the garden is yours to enjoy.

It glistens, covered in a luscious, four-acre sprawl of green mosses, dotted with large maple trees that glow like embers in the autumnal months. Perhaps less celebrated than it’s more popular counterparts, this quiet garden in Kyoto is a must see masterpiece. The textured land is an incredible delight that trains the eye to see the intricacies of nature. Experience pure serenity in the rainy season when the land lights up with vibrant pigments and radiant flowers.
