Carmine Abate was born in 1954 in Carfizzi, an Arbëresh village of the Calabria region. He emigrated to Hamburg as a young man and now lives in Besenello, Trentino. His debut as a writer in Germany with Den Koffer und weg! (1984) was followed by successful novels and a collection of short stories mainly focused on the themes of migrants and the integration of cultures. La collina del Vento (Mondadori, 2012) won the 50th Campiello Prize.
This talk is part of the series 'Alter-Natives', promoted by T Fondaco dei Tedeschi in collaboration with the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice. It presents works of writers that were born outside of Italy and have chosen the Italian language to share the experience of those who “live” in a linguistic area that is different from one’s own.
