Château Margaux

For more than 150 years, Château Margaux, a Premier Grand Cru Classé, has been recognized as one of the most iconic and respected estates of Bordeaux. Known for their trademark depth and complexity, balanced by rare elegance and finesse, Château Margaux produces some of the most sought-after wines in the world. The origins of the estate can be traced back to the 15th century when the Lestonnac family took over a grain-growing property and made the agricultural change from cereal crops to vines. Further developments occurred when, more than a century later, the estate manager Monsieur Berlon saw the benefits of vinifying red and white grapes separately. This change was what set Château Margaux firmly on the path to modern vinification practices and being internationally renown. In 1977, the estate was purchased by the late André Mentzelopoulos, and it is now run by his daughter, Corinne Mentzelopoulos. The vineyard of Château Margaux covers 202 acres and it is situated on soils that are mostly gravelly but also clay-limestone, and whose diversity is surely partly responsible for the complexity of the wines they produce. Château Margaux is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (at least 80%), Merlot (between 10 and 15%) and finally Petit Verdot (around 5%) and a little Cabernet Franc. These proportions vary of course according to the vintage, but the Cabernet Sauvignon always remains very predominant, being the “body and soul” of our wine.
